BMW i7 M70: The man-machine

The BMW i7 M70 is almost everything. It is also a bit of an electric social and mobility discourse. Above all, however, it is simply good.

Oh yes: a detailed price list for the optional extras is also included free of charge.

You immediately feel like wearing a suit yourself. The dark blue silhouette is effective. And the one-colour lacquer version doesn't look too bulky. Mono looks more like an elder statesman. There are many pictures circulating in the media with two-colour paintwork, at a surcharge of around 12,000 euros. You can do it. But you don't have to. Because this segment is always about dialogue, the correspondence between man and car, between the individual and society. The tone has to be right. The colour tone has to be chosen wisely. Prejudices need to be broken down, structures need to be opened up. Every journey becomes a diplomatic summit meeting. Remain friendly, even if the i7 doesn't really get by with just one designated parking space.

BMW i7 M70 xDrive Limousine

  • Drive
    Two synchronous machines
  • Vmax:
    250 km/h
  • Power
    485 kW (660 hp)
  • Acceleration 0-100 km/h:
    3,7 s
  • Max. Tourque
    1.100 Nm

The mood in the rear is completely different, with hardly any light, the blinds are up, the ambient lighting is blue and the atmosphere is more like a piano melody. Two-coloured, vegan business class lounge chairs. Adjustable in all directions. The surfaces flatter the hands, the armchairs flatter the whole body, massaging, as desired. The i7 M70 is so much at the same time that you can be playfully distracted from your thoughts. What was that again? Ah yes...! "So that's the crux of the matter!" The great Goethe. No one else comes into question here. No one else would have the quality to describe the essence of these complex mobile things in such simple words. The eternal seduction.

The i7 M70 xDrive is a true master at this. Depending on the encounter, depending on the mood, depending on the need, it appears one way or the other. It can be a contemporary luxury saloon, then again an almost antique Biedermeier figure. Sometimes it changes from curve to curve. It would be fundamentally wrong to drive against it. Have we already mentioned the boost rocker switch on the steering wheel? No. The all-electric i7 has a single rocker switch on the steering wheel where the rocker switch for downshifting gears is located in combustion vehicles and in Formula 1.

Surrounded by a signal red signature line, the word Boost is printed in white letters. Pull once and all systems go into attack mode, acoustically accompanied by an inhaling Star Wars wrap drive noise that sounds like it was composed by Hans Zimmer himself; which is probably because Hans Zimmer composed it himself. The very sensitive accelerator pedal in the footwell becomes an alert, tense trigger. Almost surreal. Somehow unworldly for all those who look at the i7 M70 from the old automotive world.

Therefore, at this point, simply a list. With a claim to completeness.

Editor & Photographer
One car. One camera. A driver. The location? Gladly a city like New York, Cape Town, Berlin or Tokyo. If, on top of that, a typhoon passes through, the conditions are almost ideal. Matthias Mederer may swear like an ill-bred bare-nuckle fighter, but he also delivers. Compulsory and freestyle. His style: cinematic. "Basically, it's like a harmless Tarantino film for me: good soundtrack, a few crazy dialogues and with a few little tricks, in the end it's mainly the story that makes the mark." Well, and he can also write more than remarkably.
