Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este: Yes, I Villa!

Simon Kidston

Ramp columnist Simon Kidston is well occupied writing his regular ramp columns and re-buying his family's former collection. Among them are exclusive pieces like a 1938 Bugatti Type 57C convertible or a Gipsy Moth his father once flew in New Zealand. On the side, he is also co-organizer and presenter of the Concorso D'Eleganza Villa D'Este and one of the world's most renowned classic car connoisseurs.

The Cars

Yes, officially, of course, the Concorso is all about the cars. But to use the word "exclusive" here is almost a bit too generalized when talking about the unique pieces on Lake Como. In addition to the best-preserved pre-war rarities, there are, of course, rows and rows of legendary collector's items, as well as concept cars and prototypes like Marc Philipp Gemballa's Marsien. You can hear, see and smell the cars up close.

Lake Como

The locals call it Lario, like a member of the family. Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy. George Clooney has had a house here for years. And the lake serves as a movie set time and time again. Legendary films like Star Wars: Episode II, James Bond - Casino Royale, or Ocean's 12 were filmed here.

The People

Clothes, style, attitude. Is it the location? Compared to Pebble Beach, people in Villa D'Este are far more tasteful and stylish than their Californian counterparts. Everything from the pocket square to the ring on the little finger is perfectly coordinated and great fun. Only costume designers in the film industry are probably constantly reminded of their work.

Darth Vader

Will it be released this year? Well, that's out of our hands, of course, as you can imagine. Nevertheless, the chances are not bad. After all, quite a lot of the rich, beautiful, and powerful gather at the Villa D'Este this weekend.
