E-Lorean: Back to the Future
The best DeLorean ever built - which no longer is one. That's how Armin Pohl sums up his latest vehicle project. But that doesn't tell the whole story of the prototype called the »e-Lorean«. And only made us more curious: Why is a special effects expert rebuilding a historic (sports) car and converting it to electric drive? And what does »Back to the Future« have to do with it? These were the questions we asked Pohl - and took a close look at his special sports car. Let's say this much: As a creative from the movie industry, Armin Pohl naturally knows the science fiction trilogy - and has long held the DeLorean DMC-12 in high regard. The 54-year-old believes that it should have been electrically powered at the time of its market launch.
»I thought that such a truly modern roaring combustion engine and this design somehow didn't fit together. And that's when the idea with the electric drive came up. It did fit,« he says, explaining his decision to create the modern prototype. With a new driver's cage, more power than ever and state-of-the-art infotainment with gesture control. Which is exactly in keeping with the spirit of the base vehicle - in the beginning of its life as a vehicle, it was itself a prototype and was used to train mechanics: »In fact, I have a plaque in the windshield that reads: "DeLorean Motor Company Training Car." That's when I realized we had taken apart a prototype.«
Thus also on board: the spirit of a modern electric sports car and the aspiration to develop the future with a classic - which Pohl also talks about in the interview in the upcoming ramp #55. Just as he does about vehicle culture in general - and the heavily debated topic of the speed limit.
