Jochen Rindt starb am 5. September 1970 in Monza, kurz vor halb vier. Sein einziger Konkurrent um den Titel, Jacky Ickx, schaffte es in den letzten drei Rennen der Saison nicht mehr, den Punkterückstand auf den Toten aufzuholen. Jochen Rindt bleibt bis heute einziger posthumer Weltmeister in der Formel-1-Geschichte.
